Chalk Talk: The Value of Extracurricular Activities
Joining the volleyball team, the school band or drama club is far more important than just getting involved and meeting new people. Extracurricular activities have great value when it comes to a number of important educational factors. Students who are involved in school activities have a consistently higher attendance rate. Kids who participate in clubs or sports perform better academically – both in class and on important state standardized tests. Participation in school activities is also a great indicator of future educational success: students who are highly involved in high school generally go on to college and perform well. While the social and emotional benefits of participation are certainly real, the added benefit of increased academic performance is extremely encouraging.
