Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Marietta District Curriculum

Mathematics students in Marietta gain foundational skills in elementary and middle school that allow them to take on more complex studies in high school. The statistics and probability curriculum focuses on interpretation of data. Working with quantitative and categorical data, students learn how to interpret linear models. Students also use measurement variables to summarize, represent, or interpret data. The rules of probability are discussed, which allows students to understand and predict the likelihood of statistical events.

A fundamental component of the Marietta curriculum is a study in the fine arts. Students that participate in music courses acquire the skills needed to perform vocal or instrumental music. Students begin by learning the basics, including rhythm, tone, beat, pitch, and musical notation. Working collaboratively with their peers, students produce music that becomes increasingly complex as they move from grade level to grade level.

Chalk Talk: Social Media as a Learning Tool

The prevalence of social media today provides many excellent learning opportunities for students. Studies show that most people get the news from sites like Facebook. With such easy access, students can utilize such platforms to learn about the world around them. The interactivity of sites like Twitter allow students to collaborate with one another on school projects, even if their partner is across the country or the globe. Apps like Instagram offer valuable opportunities to learn as well. Students can investigate photos from historical sites or that were taken at a recent event to supplement their classroom learning. While parents and teachers should monitor kids’ use of social media closely, they should also recognize the vast power social media offers as a learning tool.
