Chalk Talk: How to Lessen School Related Stress
Some stress is normal for kids; however, if it begins to affect them in a negative way, they might need your help. After determining that you aren’t the one causing your child’s stress, spend time talking to your child about what is bothering them the most. It is easy to make assumptions, but hearing their point of view will help you determine what they need. Do test days really bother your child? Is there a relationship at school that is hurting them? Maybe your child needs to find an outlet, an extracurricular activity, which builds on their strengths. Once they do, or if they already have one, praise them for it just as much as you would their accomplishments in school. Healthy habits can also decrease stress. Is your child getting enough sleep or eating balanced meals? If you try something and don’t notice a change in your child’s stress level, then try something else. Knowing that their parents care and are willing to help may just be what your child needs.
