Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Martinsville District Curriculum

The skill of writing begins in kindergarten, in the Martinsville City Public Schools. At this age the students learn to recognize and write the letters of the alphabet. As this skill is mastered students begin to learn about the different reference materials to use when writing, including the thesaurus, dictionary and on-line sources. From here they learn about rough drafts, editing and rewriting their work until it reaches their audience effectively. When these students finish their high school education, they are able to approach any written work assigned by their employers or university professors with confidence.

Children begin their pathway through the world of social studies by learning about their immediate world and the people within it. They then proceed to find out about their community, its leaders and the people within it. Their horizons expand as they learn about their state, country and the world. They discover the landforms and the cultures that shape each area and helped create the way they are today.

Chalk Talk: What a Kindergarten Child Can Learn Through Cooking

Kindergarten children learn best when they are provided with a rich assortment of learning opportunities. When a child helps a parent, or other adult, cook, the results can be seen in many areas. First of all, their fine motor skills will be improved through the use of some of the tools that are used, such as graters which make their hands stronger. The way they look at the world is also changed as they begin to see the science around them, from the freezing of ice to the way a batter can change to a baked good. Their vocabulary will also grow with comprehension of words such as half, or teaspoons, cup or the ingredients in a recipe.
