Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mauldin District Curriculum

The Math curriculum requires students to master concepts at a greater depth than in the past. Students study fewer standards in a year, but over a longer duration and at a higher level allowing them to draw upon prior knowledge to increase their problem solving skills. By doing so, they develop their logical, abstract and quantitative forms of reasoning. They are expected to have higher retention of the ideas and require less review of the standards in future classes.

In their English Language Arts studies, students learn to synthesize both non-fiction and literature, as well as express themselves using the written word. The Common Core encourages collaboration amongst the content areas so that students are able to use their language skills in other subjects such as science and social studies. However, more importantly, this collaboration prepares students for life in the real world and helps develop valuable critical thinking skills.

Chalk Talk: Study Breaks

Students who spend several hours each day studying can be more efficient if they take frequent breaks. Reviewing course material from each day can go a long way when it is time to take a test. The duration of the time spent studying should determine the amount of time a study break should be. Utilizing this time to get fresh air, and exercise will also improve the efficiency of study time over remaining sedentary. Consider taking a short walk after a period of studying to increase oxygen flow to the brain and improve the ability to retain information.
