Chalk Talk: Phrases To Ban From Writing
Students sometimes come to rely on overused phrases when they reach a point in their writing in which they are stuck. Using phrases like, “The reason why is because…” shows a lack of creativity and is grammatically incorrect to boot. Another phrase students should avoid is, “It’s just my opinion, but…” The purpose of writing an essay is to provide one’s point of view, so students need to eliminate such phrases and instead offer their opinion in an unapologetic manner. There are also many words students should avoid using in their writings. “Like” is far too overused in daily conversation and is beginning to appear in students’ essays. “Things” and “stuff” are two more words that are unnecessary. They are also extremely vague. If your child struggles to avoid these common phrases and words, help them out by proofreading their work before they submit it. Getting feedback will help them develop better writing skills and will ensure a better grade.
