Chalk Talk: Value of Music Education

Much research has been conducted on the positive impacts of music, and the value of having music a part of your child’s education cannot be understated. Students who engage in musical studies show a much lower lifetime use of unhealthy substances and are far less prone to poor decision-making and violence. In the classroom, music students demonstrate improved skills related to the study of math and science, particularly spatial abilities. Surveys of engineers and others in highly technical fields find that a majority of workers in those career areas studied music as children, and many continue to study and perform music to this day. For college-bound students, participation in music is recommended by the U.S. Department of Education as well as the College Board. Far more than just learning to sing or play an instrument, music education provides valuable lifelong skills that can enhance the success of all students.
