Educating Our Parents: Understanding the McAlester District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, the students will become proficient readers of a multitude of genres, such as fiction, non-fiction, a variety of articles and essays, biographies, and much more. The teachers instruct the students from an early age how to use a variety of reading strategies to be the best readers they can be. The teachers do this by teaching lessons in reading, such as phonics, fluency, accuracy in reading, vocabulary acquisition strategies, comprehension, syllabication, and guided reading.

In Mathematics, the students are taught number sense concepts beginning in the early primary grades. The instructors help familiarize the students with a variety of number sense activities, such as patterning, identifying relationships in patterns of numbers, odd and even numbers, the use of cubes and other manipulatives to develop one-to-one correspondence, and the simple addition and subtraction of numbers in isolation and through story problems.

Chalk Talk: What Is One-to-One Correspondence?

One-to-one correspondence in math and reading instruction helps the child, through practice, learn to visualize and focus on objects in order to solve problems or to be better readers. In math, one-to-one correspondence is used in the early grades to learn to count, and to match up each object with the specific number. The teacher may set out ten different manipulatives, such as blocks, and as the student is counting they have to touch each block in sequence. This sounds like a simple concept, but to a child that is in the early primary grades, it can be challenging. In reading, the students do the same as they are learning to read. The teacher may give them a three-word repetitive sentence, and the student, while reading, must point to each word as it is said aloud.
