Educating Our Parents: Understanding the McKeesport District Curriculum

The Math curriculum begins in elementary school, with hands-on and guided practice through Saxon Math. Programs in middle school such as Math Connects develop concepts that prepare students to take algebra, geometry, and other courses in high school. These programs offer connections between the basic math concepts and their practical applications in the real world. They help students build problem-solving skills that prepare them for geometry, algebra or statistics.

Similarly, the English/Language Arts curriculum develops basic skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking by increasingly complexity in reading and writing assignments over the years. Of particular emphasis is student writing, and the ability to use a process that includes pre-writing, writing, editing and revising, and publishing. Language based skills are also taught so that students are able to use Standard English and understand the craft of writing.

Chalk Talk: Developing Leadership Skills

Is your child a leader, directing others toward a common goal, or are they more content to work behind the scenes toward that objective? Both types are needed in both the public and the private sector. Children who work together to develop projects learn important skills that they will use in the workplace. In and out of school, they will use core skills and concepts in literacy, math, and science throughout their academic and professional careers.
