Menasha District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Menasha Joint School District (MJSD) serves residents on the north west shore of Lake Winnebago. Its facilities include one early learning center (early childhood and 4K), five elementary schools (various grade levels), one middle school (6-8), and one high school (9-12). Each elementary school has a different grade-level population: Butte de Morts, K-5; Clovis Grove, 4K-5; Gegan, K-5; Jefferson, K-2; and Nicolet, 3-5. The City of Menasha is diverse; therefore, the district offers a Spanish/English bilingual program.

We currently cover the following Menasha-area school district: Menasha Joint School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Menasha District Curriculum

The Menasha Joint School District has created a curriculum that serves as a map to learners and teachers. While the district’s standards derive from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the MJSD allows its teachers to be flexible in creating their own coursework within state boundaries. In each subject and grade level, students must demonstrate various degrees of learning, such as comprehension and analysis. Each department organizes its standards into key topics for clear use.

The early learning/4K program consists of learning in language and communication; cognition and general knowledge; health and physical development; social and emotional development; and approaches to learning. Based on the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards, instructors guide students to progress cognitively, while focusing on social development. The elementary curriculum consists of English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, music, art, and world languages.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Teaching the Whole Child

Psychologists and educators know the negative impact poverty and difficult economic periods can have on students’ learning. Students without access to print materials at home and other learning opportunities outside of school most likely will fall behind their peers. Students may face homelessness, hunger, and difficult familial relationships due to economic stress. While schools and communities cannot ensure every student has a home to live in or has an emotionally stable family, they can ensure that every student start and continue the school day less hungry. By collaborating with contracted dining services or local volunteers, schools can offer students free or reduced breakfast before school and lunch during the day to help students concentrate on their learning. Not only do students need these services while attending school, but feeding them during the summer months can also help to keep the whole child healthy. Children will not only grow physically healthy, but students will know that their community cares for them and that can make all the difference.
