Mendon District and Curriculum

Students who live in the Town of Mendon will attend either the Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District or the Pittsford Central School District. The curriculum for each district adheres to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), recently adopted by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). These benchmarks highlight the importance of English language arts and mathematics curricula that is more unified and prepares students for 21st century learning. In particular, the CCSS focuses on giving each child the skills to be literate in all subject material and to be competent with mathematical concepts. Both districts offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and the Pittsford district provides opportunities for career exploration through various programs and internships.

We currently cover the following Mendon-area school districts: Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District and Pittsford Central School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mendon District Curriculum

The main objective of each district, and the CCSS, is to prepare students for post-secondary work and education. The primary curriculum at Honeoye Falls-Lima Schools serves students academically, socially, and emotionally. At Lima Primary School, students attend full-day kindergarten. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) is an initiative that provides students with hands-on learning experiences. In both districts, students learn basic skills in core subjects, as well as art, music, library, and physical education.

At the middle school levels, both districts present challenging curricula to prepare students for high school, as well as offering more exploratory options. Departments for sixth through eighth grade instruction include English language arts, science, mathematics, social studies, art, music, physical education/health, technology education, world languages, and family and consumer science (home and careers). In subsequent grades, students have access to similar coursework; however, options are more specialized and increase in rigor as they progress toward graduation. Students may take all courses provided by the middle schools, as well as business education.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Physical Education

According to the Centers for Disease Control, only 27% of high school students are physically active for the recommended amount of time, each day, and only 29% attended physical education class in school. Of elementary students, 77% reported to have participated in unstructured play, or recess. This trend is becoming more common as state standards increase accountability in core academic subjects. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend at least 60 minutes of daily physical education and 20 minutes of recess. Regarding physical education courses, half of that time should be spent in rigorous aerobics, promoting health and wellness. Not only does exercise prevent obesity and other physical health issues, but it may prevent mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Through physical activity, students can alleviate stress and improve their self-esteem.
