Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Meridian Township District Curriculum

Elementary students are taught extensive Language Arts and Math programs in order to build the foundation of a strong education. Subjects in Reading include Spoken Discourse, in which students are graded on their oral communication, and Reading Attitude where a student’s enjoyment of reading comes into play. Math courses in elementary school range from simple Number Sense to the more complex Data and Probability.

Middle school students are offered a wide range of possibilities for extending their education and career interests. While still building on the foundation that was started in elementary school, middle school students will begin to experience more personal academic growth as they explore the many electives available to them. Some of the courses offered include Law, Personal Fitness, and Landscape Architecture. Students in high school have the resources available to graduate with the best of educations. Advanced Placement classes in Math, Science, English, and Languages give students the opportunity to earn college credit.

Chalk Talk: How to Set Up a Study Area in Your Home

A long day at school can make coming home to do even more work seem like a daunting chore for students. That’s why it is important for parents to create an area in the home specifically designed for this purpose. Find a quiet area of the house free of distractions such as TV, radio, and video games. Make sure the area has adequate lighting and space for students to spread out any necessary books, computers, or papers. Having a stash of school supplies nearby will also come in handy so students do not have to keep getting up and looking for the materials they need. Lastly, try to create this space in an area of your home that is easily seen by you the parent which will help keep students on task. With the right atmosphere and supplies, completing homework can be more enjoyable and less of a chore.
