Merrillville District and Curriculum
Merrillville is a community of 35,000 with one high school, one middle and intermediate school separately and five elementary schools. Recognizing that the amount of time spent in recreational reading is a predictor of students’ academic success, the Merrillville Community School Corporation has adopted a district-wide required reading program. All students are required to read and pass tests to accumulate a certain number of points. Students’ progress will be assessed each grading period.
We currently cover the following Merrillville-area school district: Merrillville Community School Corporation.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Merrillville District Curriculum
Merrillville has completed the arduous task of mapping their entire curriculum for each subject area grades K-12. Curriculum mapping is the most recent tool employed by districts to keep the public informed about curriculum delivery. It is an organized listing of student expectations in all subject areas. These ‘curriculum maps’ are aligned to the Indiana Department of Education standards. The goal of curriculum maps is to provide a detailed scaffold of the direction of curricular delivery in each subject.
Merrillville utilizes a ‘schools of choice’ format that allows parents to have some say in which school their child attends. This is an opportunity to allow parents some voice in which school their child attends; and is an option unique to the district. Parents are encouraged to set up visits to the schools they are interested in and submit their request for a school of choice far in advance of the upcoming school year.

Chalk Talk: Preparing for a Test
As early as first grade children are expected to rise to the challenge of taking tests. This can be very intimidating for children but there are tips parents can share with their children to make it a worthwhile experience instead. Try to incorporate some of the following ideas into your child’s academic routine. Talk about the purpose of testing with your child. The goal of testing is to assess a child’s mastery of material. Remind them that we are tested throughout our lives and it is better to learn how to ‘handle’ it early. Create a master schedule of what tests the child will be taking and when. Then create a study schedule that will help them prepare well in advance. Find online tests on the subject that will allow your child to practice prior to the test. Ask them to give feedback on what they feel they can do to prepare as well.
