Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mesquite District Curriculum

Mathematics in CCSD elementary schools seamlessly integrates concepts of geometry and algebra on a contextualized basis so that students begin to understand the nature and applications of mathematics at an early age. In high school, these skills are furthered in the required Algebra I and II courses and Geometry. Students are encouraged to further develop and specialize their program of study by selecting the level of math that is appropriate for their interest and career path.

Language Arts is taught as an integral part of the curriculum, the idea being that if students can read to learn applicable subject-based information, they will be able to succeed in all other subjects as well. Communication basics like speaking and listening are fostered early, and then grow into reading and composition skills later in middle school. High school students learn composition skills and develop an understanding of thematic concepts in literature.

Chalk Talk: Career Planning: Striking a Balance

Let’s face it: not every aspiring athlete will go pro. Helping students recognize their own skills, then showing them a range of careers that rely on those skill sets is an excellent way to start a conversation with your child about realistic careers. Some students may have an interest in space, and while “astronaut” is a career choice, more realistic careers in related fields include engineers who design satellites to capture distant images and send them back to us. Even high school seniors may have a limited view of the jobs that are available in the world, but parents can point out the range of options, the necessary skills, and the work and education involved to help students find success and happiness in a career that suits them.
