Miami Gardens District and Curriculum
Miami-Dade Public Schools desires for students to become lifelong learners through innovative and differentiated instruction. Key stakeholders such as parents, students, businesses, and the community are encouraged to become involved in education. Instruction within the schools is monitored for adherence to all academic standards. The Mathematics curriculum of Miami-Dade Public Schools is based upon the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. In elementary schools, students are required to spend 60 minutes per day on math. Middle schools students are able to enroll in high school-level math classes when appropriate, and students that need a little extra help are encouraged to take intensive math classes. In high school, students are required to complete 4 credits in math that are to include algebra, geometry, and 2 other advanced math classes.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Miami Gardens District Curriculum
Elementary school science for Miami-Dade Public Schools is based upon making inquiry into the natural and man-made
worlds and learning about them through hands-on activities. In middle school, students study matter, energy, force,
motion, earth, space, life processes, and the environment. In high school, students build upon their scientific
foundations as they take on biology, chemistry, physical science, and physics.
The goal of the Language Arts/Reading program is to produce literate citizens for the future. Miami-Dade Public
Schools uses the best practices to teach reading and writing and provides professional development for teachers.
In elementary school, students are exposed to literature about things like the five senses, animals and nature.
Other reading selections in upper grades range from classical to modern and encompass all genres. In addition to
this well-rounded selection for reading, students are exposed to different styles of writing and creative expression.

- District Honors - Miami-Dade Schools Superintendant Alberto M. Carvalho was recognized for his use of data by the Florida Department of Education. Mr. Carvalho has shown that information about student achievement and its utilization in planning instruction is key to student success.
- Teacher Recognition - Alexandre Lopes is awarded Florida's 2013 Teacher of the year award. Mr. Lopes leads a Learning Experience Alternative Program (LEAP) for pre-K students with special needs. This program brings hands-on learning opportunities to students in alternative programs.
- Chess Champs - Students who are a part of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Title I Schools Chess program brought honor to the district at the 2012 National Elementary Chess Championships. Some benefits reaped from the program include critical thinking, sportsmanship, teamwork, self-discipline, and confidence.
