Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Middlesex Centre District Curriculum

Students are able to take on independent study and create works of original scholarship under the guidance of an academic advisor. This could be an opportunity to delve deeply into one subject or a chance to present work that is cross-curricular in nature. Children also learn how to use the Internet, social media, mobile phones, and other technologies in a responsible and respectful manner. These opportunities are established within the guidelines in the curriculum that promote student success.

Preparing students for their career future is an important aspect of the curriculum's role. Students are able to take courses that prepare them for the workforce in high skills areas following graduation and there are opportunities to participate in experiential learning. The fields in which these programs are available are growing and shaped by the the goals that students and community members share.

Chalk Talk: What Do Students Learn in a Financial Literacy Course?

Financial literacy helps students understand more about managing money and how banks, insurance and financial investments work. Students examine various careers as well. The knowledge and skills required to be a good worker are learned, including having a good work ethic, being an effective communicator, and being honest and reliable. Various aspects of employment are examined as well. Students learn about benefits packages that supplement income, including retirement. Students examine the advantages and disadvantages of becoming an entrepreneur, as well as the pathways one must take in order to become a business owner. The local, provincial, and national economies are also analyzed. Students look at various niches of business and determine if they are experiencing growth or decline. Using this information, learners develop proposals for businesses they feel will succeed in the current economic climate.
