Midland District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Midland Independent School District bases their curriculum on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. With this foundation, students are able to access a curriculum that reaches each student and helps them to excel. The curriculum provides classroom teachers with a series of objectives and standards they can use to plan their instruction; it does not determine how a teacher should deliver the objectives, the goal is to ensure all students are taught to the same high quality standards.

We currently cover the following Midland-area school district: Midland Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Midland District Curriculum

The Mathematics curriculum begins by introducing children to counting. From here students learn how to use sets of items to demonstrate adding and subtracting. With this as a foundation, students are able to learn how to learn to work with numbers of all kinds. When they reach high school and take algebra they will be able to use the website College Preparatory Mathematics, then in geometry they use videos and several websites to enrich their experience.

In the English curriculum, students begin by learning how to recognize when words rhyme and how to retell one or two events of a story. By fifth grade they learn how to share their experiences with a story with others in their class. This helps the students to examine the stories at a deeper level to help make them personal to them. These students have the opportunity to learn how to make each book they read a part of them by different means of reflecting on the text.

Chalk Talk: Creative Writing Activities

Children may be asked to create an original work of writing. To some this is easy to do, for others it is very difficult. If there is a child that struggles to come up with topics to write about, here are some ideas to give them boost. Ask the child to imagine how something happened, originally. For example, they could write about why clouds are in the sky, or how the giraffe got its neck. Another activity is to show the child a picture or postcard and ask them to create a story about it, or ask them to draw a cartoon. Any of these activities might cause a spark of creativity to light up within the child.
