The Montana Office of Public Instruction has implemented the comprehensive curriculum, and has identified the Common Core as English Language Arts and Mathematics.

We currently cover the following Miles City-area school district: Miles City Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Miles City District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, the students in grades K-12 are exposed to a wide variety of American Indian literature. A part of the core curriculum in this area, as well as history, is taught using literature, both fiction and nonfiction on the subject of the American Indian culture. In addition to enhancing reading skills, using this subject area teaches the children about the history and ancestry of the area of Miles City, and their state of Montana. Using American Indian literature, the teachers can teach cross-curricular concepts.

In Math, students follow the learning strand of geometry, and other major topical strands, from elementary through high school. In the primary grades, they learn about two dimensional and three dimensional figures, and compare and contrast the characteristics of the figures. The students also show their knowledge of geometric figures through patterning and the creation of symmetrical and asymmetrical objects.

Chalk Talk: Linking History with English Language Arts

History is taught using lessons, videos, role play activities, and a multitude of readings. Non-fiction literature, poetry, realistic fiction, biographies, autobiographies, narratives and essays are all used in the teaching of this subject. Teachers can easily use the teaching of English Language Arts within history, and vice versa, to help reinforce any skills that have been previously learned. Many subject areas can be taught this way, and it allows the teachers to multiply their lessons so the students can learn even more!
