Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Milton District Curriculum
Students will participate in coursework from mathematics, English, science, social studies, visual arts, music, physical education and technology at the elementary, middle, and high school level. Honors or Advanced coursework is available at the high school level for those who academically qualify. The district supports the career and college readiness initiatives for its students. The district also focuses on technology integration and application within the curriculum.
The English language arts curriculum supports topics related to improved reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities in all subjects. In the elementary grades, students engage in a study of literature, gaining valuable skills that allow them to improve their ability to read more complex works. Students work on identifying main ideas and key details by asking and answering questions about a text they are reading. Students also learn to describe essential features of characters, including their motivations or feelings, to demonstrate deeper understanding of character development in a story.

Chalk Talk: Common Core - Why Only ELA and Math?
English Language Arts and Mathematics are the current focus of Common Core. They were chosen as they are often viewed as the building blocks or foundational skill sets for other subject areas. Knowing how to read, write, speak and listen effectively are key skills for all college and career readiness and supplemental other disciplines such as social studies and science. The Common Core Standards have introduced expectations about reading abilities, comprehension, and analysis with non-fiction in addition to literary works. While the Common Core Standards and the NGA Center and the Council of Chief State School Officer are not currently developing common standards in other content areas, there is some work underway in the areas of science, world languages, and arts by other organizations to help unify their goals and standards as well.
