Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Minto District Curriculum

In English, the literacy skills which students gain are meant to bring about analytic, interpretative and evaluative thinking. In History, conceptual understandings about change and continuity, social movements, governance and institutions are raised through the study of historical periods. Both subjects have technology integrated into learning through its use for researching and creating student work.

In Science, the scientific content is interlaced with opportunities to investigate phenomenon and principles thereby developing the means for process-oriented, scientific thinking. In Math, students learn how to solve numerical, algebraic and geometrical problems and gain the basis with which they can reason abstractly and logically. Each of these areas of critical thought help students master advanced learning and real-world pursuits in their future.

Minto District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The local schools use a standards-based curriculum that builds student knowledge from an elementary foundation toward the ability to perform more complex work within each subject. The framework is built around grade-level expectations, which represent the skills and knowledge students must develop in order to be prepared for their next year. Within the subjects, the curriculum goes beyond the basic skills and content of subjects and also specifies the types of critical thinking which will emerge through the coursework of a subject.

We currently cover the following Minto-area school districts: Wellington Catholic District School Board, Upper Grand District School Board.

Keeping Informed: Recent Minto Educational News

  • Full-Day Kindergarten - Through significant planning and facilities initiatives, the Upper Grand District is working on developing enough classroom space to have Full-Day Kindergarten available to all students in the district. This goal will take a few years to accomplish and is a process which allows for input from community members.
  • Youth Engaged - Students have a new website resource that they can use to plan for their community service which is a part of their graduation requirements. This site helps plan, connect with, and track community service goals. Students may find opportunities they did not know existed through this new portal for student engagement in civic activities.
  • Flash Mob Learning - The Continuing Education Department in the Upper Grand District has caught onto one of the more unique social trends emerging from social media: the flash mob. Flash mobs are brought together for the purpose of dancing and singing, and has a way of bringing joy to everyone involved, and everyone who gets to watch this amazing spectacle.

Chalk Talk: The Role of Arts Education

The visual and performing arts are a part of the curriculum in all grades, and has been a mainstay of enrichment education. The goal of arts education is to promote creativity, out of the box thinking, aesthetic appreciation, recognition of craft, and understanding of the role of art within our lives. Even for students who do not consider themselves artistic, the opportunities to play around with paint, clay and other media can provide an appreciable diversion from a rigorous academic routine. For many students, art classes allow talents to emerge and be nurtured, ensuring us the next generation of artists.
