Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mississauga District Curriculum

The curriculum that is taught to the students in Mississauga is developed at the provincial level. Its purpose is to ensure all students in Ontario receive instruction to high standards of learning that will properly prepare students for 21st century work and learning goals. The Ontario Curriculum is a framework for organizing the subjects into areas of knowledge that students should master in order to be proficient in the subject.

For example, in English students will learn a variety of reading strategies for literary and informational texts; that knowledge will promote the abilities to think critically and analyze information. In math, students will learn about geometry, algebra, and data analysis, among other skills, and will develop reasoning and problem-solving thinking skills. The curriculum gives a broad overview of the subject matter and the conceptual foundations that underlie the learning.

Ontario Tutors

The core values that underpin my role as an educator are taking a holistic approach to education and attending to the whole child. I firmly believe that learning is not just about the academics or what the child cognitively learns. It is includes social and emotional development that comes from being in a educational environment, as well as physical development through physical education and fine motor activities. Learning is about creating and being part of a community so that students are able to learn from one another. They begin to realize the importance of interdependence and the emotional well-being of individuals and how much they can learn from their peers.
Education provides a privilege and opportunity to both learn about and impact the world. Education is an equalizer and everyone needs to receive the encouragement to reach the pinnacle of their talents. My goal as a tutor is the same as my goal as student, to improve the lives of those around me through shared knowledge acquisition. My students and I will learn together: them the material and me how to encourage them to develop their talents.
Education is life-long learning, both in and out of the classroom. As educators, we must inspire a love of learning. We must be responsive to where are students are at, meet them, and from there expand and elevate their thinking. We also must challenge our students to search for their own inspirations and to rise to fulfill their unique potentials.

Chalk Talk: Health and Physical Education Learning

One area that schools focus on is the Health and Physical Education Learning so that students are able to get activity, develop motor coordination skills, and learn about health and well-being. Nutrition is a primary topic of study in the elementary health curriculum. Wellness and exercise are another critical aspect of the health curriculum. Students identify the types of physical activities they enjoy, and also learn about the health benefits of staying active. They also learn how to play many different games and how to participate in team activities. There are also individual sports, like running, that allow students to enjoy physical activity on their own. All these learning opportunities, are to assist students in developing their own health and wellness habits in life.
