Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mississippi Mills District Curriculum

The framework for History is broad and encompasses many aspects of social, economic, and political history for students to understand. This develops conceptual awareness of change and continuity, systems of governance, economic systems, and many more areas. The English curriculum shapes the literacy and communication of students, and teaches analysis, interpretation, and personal expression.

The learning students engage in with their Math and Science education provides the basis for reasoning, process-oriented thinking, observation and evaluative thinking, and the means to solve problems. In both Math and Science, literacy and communication is focused on. Another emphasis that has been brought into these subjects is technology, and students are able to use and study technology in many ways. For students who take World Languages, the courses generate bilingualism and biliteracy, enabling students to enter a global work environment.

Mississippi Mills District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The local districts follow the instructional plan explained within the Ontario Curriculum. This curriculum is designed to have standards of learning within each subject that students need to demonstrate proficiency in. It is also a student-centered curriculum in that programs designed to engage student curiosity are a part of the curricular experience. The curriculum provides both a foundational basis for academic subjects and opportunities to experience extracurriculars as well. The core classes of English, History, World Languages, Math and Science offer very different learning experiences and challenges for students.

We currently cover the following Mississippi Mills-area school districts: Upper Canada District School Board, Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario.

Chalk Talk: Early Decision

Early Decision (ED) is a type of college application that has become increasingly popular. They have an early due-date, which is usually November 1st. This presents challenges for many students, but it does come with the reward of a fairly quick response. Students usually receive a decision by mid-December. ED also carries some other benefits. It’s binding, which means students agree to attend that college if accepted. Because of this, the college tends to favor those applicants, which leads to a significantly higher acceptance rate. Of course, one drawback to the application being binding, is that students don’t have the freedom to choose another college to attend.
