Missouri City District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Missouri City Schools use the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills to create their curriculum. This foundation of courses helps each of the students to succeed in their post-secondary pursuits. The curriculum is structured so that students continually capitalize on past learning to deepen their understanding in each subject. There are expectations for a wide range of skills, knowledge, and conceptual awareness that students are to develop during their education, ultimately providing them with a strong grasp of the content and the ability to think about it critically.

We currently cover the following Missouri City-area school district: Fort Bend Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Missouri City District Curriculum

Biology is one aspect of the science curriculum at Missouri City Schools. This subject is introduced by showing students the different life forms that are around them, such as plants, animals and insects. Students continue with this education by learning about the systems that allow them to survive. By middle school, students have gained enough background knowledge that they are able to dissect a frog. Then in high school, they are able to look at more complex living bodies.

The reading curriculum at Missouri City Schools helps students elevate their reading skills each, and every, year. They begin by learning how to decode words so that they can learn how unknown words sound and, eventually, what the words mean. Students also learn strategies to find the characteristics of a book and which genre the work of literature fits into. These skills allow students to read about symbolism in “A Farewell to Arms” and to be able to reflect on “Fast Food Nation” and see how this book is helpful in their lives.

Chalk Talk: Celebrating the New School Year

When the new school year begins some students are excited while others almost dread the day. There are ways for a parent to help a child celebrate this beginning which may help all students become more excited. When the first day comes around, present the child with a cornucopia of new supplies along with some special treats, such as small toys or candies. Another celebration is to allow the child, plus a couple of friends, to have an after school movie party. They can choose a movie to watch, at home or at the theater, complete with popcorn. Another idea is one that can be build upon throughout the year. Have the child look for articles that are about their dreams. They would clip these and place them in a box. The goals may change overtime, where this box becomes a sort of scrapbook that they can look over and see how they have changed and grown. With these ideas in mind, parents can show children that the education they receive is important.
