Moberly District and Curriculum

The Moberly School District challenges students to read complex and difficult texts critically. Students read novels and fiction texts but also complex nonfiction texts that provide context and concept knowledge, not just in English classes, but in social studies and science classes. Students are asked to read for comprehension but also for intent and technique. Students are asked questions about their reading, pushing them to analyze these texts and discuss them, both on paper and orally.

We currently cover the following Moberly-area school district: Moberly School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Moberly District Curriculum

The curriculum provides clear expectations for students in English language arts, social students, science, math, and technical subjects. A focus is maintained on core knowledge and skills, which are evaluated and updated. Teachers follow the school’s curriculum but are given the freedom to present material however they need to in order to fit the needs of students, who may have varying learning styles and abilities.

The skills and knowledge presented in the curriculum are meant to prepare students for life outside the classroom. Students are taught to use critical thinking skills and to read closely. They learn to use reasoning and thoughtful evidence collection skills. All of this will serve them well later in life. This approach stresses the communication and analytic, problem-solving skills which are required for success in their post-secondary life.

Students are told that extracurricular activities can make or break a college application, and there’s some truth to this. Being involved in clubs, sports, and other activities definitely looks good to a college because it demonstrates all sorts of positive qualities, but students shouldn’t lose sight of the true goal. For many adults looking back to high school and college, these clubs, sports, arts, music, and other activities hold some of their fondest memories of high school. Students meet lifelong friends through these activities. So much of high school is stressful, and these clubs and activities can offer a rare stress reliever. Plus, they are often fun. So, it’s true that colleges like to see students who are involved and engaged in their school community outside of class, but extracurricular activities can be much more meaningful than just a line on a resume.
