Modesto District and Curriculum

The Modesto schools use curriculum that have been designed for all subjects areas,  enrichment and alternative type programs. In programs like International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement, Career-oriented or Technology-focused programs there are curriculum that describe what students will be expected to learn through their courses. Each curriculum provides measurable goals that form the basis of classroom and standardized assessments. This ensures that students are learning up to the expectations and that teachers are covering all the content areas in their subjects. With the support of parents, the community, and other stakeholders, the schools strive to provide a comprehensive education that prepares students to enter adulthood fully ready to meet the challenges of college or career.

We currently cover the following Modesto-area school districts: Modesto City Schools, Stanislaus Union School District, and Sylvan Union School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Modesto District Curriculum

In the subjects of English/Language Arts and Math, teaching and learning is organized by the Common Core Standards. These present the expectations for what students should learn each year as they deepen critical thinking, analytic, problem-solving and reasoning type thinking. The standards describe the types of knowledge, concepts, and skill sets students need to master each year but it does not provide any one instructional method for teaching these standards. Teachers are able to craft lessons that fit the goal of each expectation.

To help prepare for their entry into the globalized economy, students can also learn foreign languages and achieve a high degree of fluency. Students learn how to read varying kinds of texts, including informational and literary readings, to develop a better understanding of words, phrases, and sentence structure. Learners also engage in writing exercises in their language of study. Students write letters to friends and family, develop research papers, and engage in literary writings in order to hone their ability to write in a culturally appropriate manner.

Chalk Talk: Parent Involvement Is Key to Education

Research shows that there are many factors at play when it comes to the success of a child in school. One of the most important factors is the level of involvement of the child’s parents in the educational process. Students whose parents are involved perform better in school on a variety of measures. These students hand in homework more consistently, have improved attendance, and also exhibit fewer negative behaviors in the classroom. Additionally, as parent involvement increases, so too do a child’s grades in class and their scores on standardized tests. The improved attitude about school that comes with being an engaged parent is also critical for student achievement. As the level of parental involvement rises, their child’s attitude about school improves, which in turn improves motivation to succeed and participate in educational activities. Transitional phases in education, such as moving from elementary school to middle school and middle school to high school, are made easier the more parents are involved as well.
