Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Monahans District Curriculum

In English language arts and reading, students are taught the basic principles of grammar and literary comprehension while establishing their skills in the defined core standards concepts. These skills are reinforced through studies of historical, informational, and fictional texts. Students are expected to demonstrate grade-level proficiency in reading and writing through yearly standardized testing. The accumulation of these skills prepares students to accomplish research tasks requiring clear communication of new information.

The Science curriculum at Monahans-Wickett-Pyote ISD includes the subjects of Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Physics, Environmental Science, and Engineering. In Biology, students learn about cells and their specialized parts that perform specific functions. Students explore how mutations can be harmful, and in some cases, beneficial, as well. They also learn about molecules and how their are involved in metabolic processes and energy conversions. Additionally, they learn about biomolecules, such as carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.

Chalk Talk: Public Universities

There are many misconceptions about public universities. The primary, and really only hard-and-fast difference, between a public and a private university is that a public university is funded, in part, by the state. Because of this, the state tends to have certain mandates about how students are selected to attend, and the university also falls under scrutiny regarding its programs. Public universities are usually mandated to accept a certain percentage of students who reside within the state that funds it. These students are also offered a lower tuition rate, known as in-state tuition. In general, public universities tend to be easier to get into than private ones, though this isn’t always the case, and some notable public universities are extremely selective, especially towards out-of-state applicants.
