Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Monroe Township District Curriculum

The Monroe Township Public Schools achieve their mission by writing curricula that are engaging, challenging and relevant. These curricula are developed based on the guidelines provided by two documents. The Common Core State Standards outline skills and knowledge students should acquire in math and language arts. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards set benchmarks for student learning in all other core areas.

In order to prepare students to be excellent communicators, the language arts literacy curriculum in the Monroe Township Public Schools places special emphasis on writing. In elementary school, kids begin by learning the basics of writing, including forming letters and numbers and adhering to basic rules punctuation and grammar. As students advance into higher elementary grades, they learn about verbs, adjectives and narrative writing. By middle school, students learn to construct well-written paragraphs, write expository essays and learn how to revise and edit the work of others.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Organization

Organization can be a challenge for many students. Part of the challenge is the inherent nature of adolescents – the part of the brain that controls organization and goal-setting is not fully developed until you’re in your 20s. But having multiple classes per day with homework in several classes can be an additional challenge. To keep organized, carry a planner or utilize your phone’s calendar to keep track of assignments. Get in the habit of writing down assignments as well as checking your planner or calendar each day so nothing gets lost in the fold. Another simple strategy to keep organized is to have separate notebooks for each class. Purchase notebooks with folders built in, or buy folders separately. Consider buying three ring binders as well. Keeping assignments in a hardback binder will help prevent them from getting torn or damaged. Having a place for assignments from each class will help you keep everything nice, neat and organized.
