Chalk Talk: Importance of Parental Involvement

Many factors indicate the success a student will have in school. One of the most important factors is how involved that student’s parents are in his or her education. Historically, there has been a disconnect between what teachers and parents see as “involved.” Some parents think involvement is attending band, choir and sporting events, as well as parent-teacher conferences. However, most teachers define parental involvement as helping their children with homework, providing their children with the tools they need to be successful and having expectations that their children will achieve to their best ability. If parents act as advocates for their children and support their child’s learning process, their child has a much better chance of reaching their learning potential.
