Chalk Talk: Is Your Child Ready to Stay Home Alone?

Many school children spend time at home alone. But how do you know if your child is physically and emotionally ready for the responsibilities involved with being home alone? As a general rule of thumb, children under the age of 12 should not be left at home alone. But knowing when, exactly, your child is ready for this is important as age does not always determine whether or not your child is ready. Knowing if your child is comfortable and knows the rules and guidelines for being safe alone is important. They need to know key information such as: they must not answer the door while home alone, they should never tell anyone they will be or they are at home by themselves, they need to know how to respond if an emergency occurs and who to call if anything goes wrong. There are many things to consider when deciding if your child is ready to stay by themselves at the house. For more information, see this pamphlet that goes into detail on how to know if your child is ready to be home alone.
