Chalk Talk: What is a Heterogeneously-Grouped Classroom?

Many self-contained classrooms are heterogeneously grouped. This means that the students that are placed in specific teachers' classrooms are not ability grouped in any way. They are placed with an even number of males and females and all are on various levels of reading and math. The teacher's job is to differentiate the instruction to be certain all of the students are getting their individual learning needs and styles met.
