Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Montgomery District Curriculum
The high school English language arts curriculum includes a series of lessons that promote the acquisition of excellent writing skills. Students learn to write in a variety of styles for a number of different purposes. Organization of writings is explored, such that writers effectively establish an opinion and support their opinion with specific evidence. The development of claims and counterclaims is an area of emphasis as well, with students learning to take information from various sources and fully explore multiple perspectives of the same event. To link their ideas, students learn how to utilize parts of speech, namely phrases and clauses.
The technology curriculum for Montgomery students focuses on a number of areas. Students gain an appreciation for the development of technology over the last few decades, and engage in discussions of where technology will go in the decades to come. Learners explore human-technology interactions, identifying the ways in which technology improves our lives and causes problems as well. Students explore safety and ethical issues brought about by technology.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Extracurricular Activities
Getting your child involved in extracurricular activities will provide them with a host of academic, social, and emotional benefits. Students who participate in sports, clubs, and organizations learn valuable lessons in teamwork and communication. Conducting themselves in a respectful manner is an additional lesson that many students garner from participation in activities. There are many academic benefits as well. Time-management skills improve, helping students to stay focused on the task at hand. Being able to prioritize tasks is another benefit of participation in activities. Particularly for clubs that are creativity-based, students experience an expanded capacity for innovation and creativity. From a social perspective, extracurricular activities give students a chance to make new friends and interact with other students in different grades and from different schools. Studies also show that participation in activities is a great way to boost self-esteem and improve students’ self-confidence.
