Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Montrose District Curriculum

The elementary curriculum is designed to introduce students to all the key concepts within each subject. In middle school, the sixth and seventh grade math classes provide a transition between basic and upper-level mathematics skill, while the eighth grade curriculum includes a course in pre-algebra. More than these classes, many other courses are offered including world languages, environmental classes, economics and finance classes, and social studies. Likewise, during these years, the language arts curriculum emphasizes analysis and the ability to synthesize ideas.

During social studies classes, students learn about community, time progression, and different families. They learn about concepts such as immigration and social change and see how through the actions of one or two people, parts of the world were changed, just as the actions of the students can help to change the world in the future. Art, music, and physical education are also introduced, contributing to a well-rounded education.

Chalk Talk: Teaching Kids About Fractions

When students are first being introduced to fractions, it is a must that they use manipulatives, as they provide the best visual. Even when they are older and are learning how to perform various functions with fractions, it can be beneficial to bring the manipulatives out. Once they master identifying and creating fractions with manipulatives, they can move on to using pictures. Of course, they will eventually have to understand and recognize fractions solely by numerical values, but manipulatives and pictures are necessary starting points until they achieve this understanding. When giving word problems to the class, allow students to use manipulatives or pictures to solve the problem. They should understand all parts of the problem, work with a partner or in a group, and explain how they solved it. After everyone is finished, the teacher should gauge how different groups solved the problem so that students learn all the different ways.
