Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Moss Point District Curriculum

Mathematics in Moss Point is started in the early years. The educators use manipulatives, as well as technology to assist the children in learning. One of the resources that are used through fifth grade is K-5 Math Teaching Resource. This helps the children learn by using games and hands-on activities that re-enforce what they are learning in more traditional ways while still staying true to the standards. This allows the students to achieve a knowledge of math that will take them into more advanced classes that they will face in high school.

Technology is also used to help children with Language Arts at Moss Point. Children are presented with spelling and grammar from the first years at school. They use exercises such as finger writing and in-class spelling games as well as programs such as Spelling City which shows children fun on-line activities that help them learn their words and grammar-usage. Students are continually perfecting these skills as they go through middle and high school, so that by the time they graduate they know how to write a well-formed research paper.

Chalk Talk: Helping Students with Handwriting in a High-Tech World

It is easy to forget the importance of good handwriting with all the new technology that surrounds us. However, handwriting does serve its purposes. It helps develop fine motor skills and open pathways in the brain that help build success in other areas. With the touch screens and apps that are available, children can practice their handwriting on the screen without realizing that it is a writing skill. There are also websites which offer assistance in this area, as well as book in most places that sell them. These materials can help to make each student a better learner as they open up the brain to all kinds of possibilities.
