Chalk Talk: Importance of Physical Activity at School

The United States is facing a weight problem never before seen. In fact, nearly one-third of all children are overweight or obese. While that’s due to a variety of factors, part of the problem is that many schools have cut recess and physical education courses due to budget shortfalls and an increasing emphasis on testing. However, cutting these valuable resources from the school day is having a deleterious impact on students. Children need time to run, play, and jump. These activities help them burn calories and maintain a healthier weight. Likewise, physical activities promote good mental health. A physical education curriculum also includes a wellness component that involves activities that promote the development of healthy relationships, effective communication skills, and improved social skills. Students can relieve stress through play and benefit from a boost in mood as a result of engaging in physical activities.
