Chalk Talk: Why Teach the Arts to Your Child

The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires all PA students to have experience with four different art forms throughout their schooling. These include music, visual arts, theater arts, and dance. But what are the advantages for this exposure? There has long been a debate questioning the values of the arts versus the values of core subjects such as English, math, and science. What some people do not realize is that, when students study the arts they often do better in core subjects as well. They learn to be creative, to make decisions based on what will look, sound, or appear better. They learn to think critically and express themselves in creative ways that they would likely not learn otherwise. Art students also have the opportunity to learn about others. They learn how others perceive different things, how other cultures address different art forms, and how others express their feelings, thoughts and emotions as well. All of these lessons carry over into not only core school subjects, but into life itself and assists students in being prepared for the world beyond K-12 education.
