Chalk Talk: The Importance of Parent Involvement

Parent involvement in a child’s academic life is one of the strongest predictors of success there is. The trend starts from birth when parents choose to expose their children to books and continues into the start of school. When a student sees that education is important to their parents, they in turn believe it is important to them as well. Likewise, if a student sees that academics are not a big deal in their household, they will take the same attitude to school with them. Some ways a parent can stay involved in their child’s school include going to school-wide events, keeping in contact with teachers, and checking for homework completion each day. Parents can also take what is learned in class and extend upon it at home by going on family field trips or doing special projects together. A parent who takes the time to show their child the importance of education is setting the stage for success.
