Chalk Talk: Importance of Afterschool Programs

Many school districts offer after-hours programs that provide students with a number of academic and social benefits. Students who participate in these programs show greater engagement in learning and improved academic achievement. Students show increases in performance on measures of math and language arts as well. Attendance in school is improved, as are graduation rates. Afterschool programs also provide a safe haven for children. Students can engage in learning activities, recreational activities, or do their homework, all under the supervision of a caring adult. There are mental and physical benefits too. Games and recreational activities get kids moving and burning off excess calories. And the friendships that children build with one another promote strong connections with others and feelings of positive self-worth.
