Fairfax County Public Schools offers students’ courses in the sciences that stress scientific inquiry and investigation using a variety of methods. Upon completion of these courses, they will possess the ability to apply any learned skills to everyday experiences. Elementary school courses will emphasize the importance of accuracy in any observations or investigations made by students, as well as explore common weather phenomena, plants, and animals. More advanced courses will examine energy and matter in greater depth. Earth and environmental science, biology, chemistry, and physics are all essential components of science courses at Fairfax County Schools.

Chalk Talk: Speech Articulators and Sounds

The tongue, teeth, lips, and other structures in the mouth and face are all essential for creating speech sounds. When it comes to vowels in particular, rounding of the lips and lowering or raising of the tongue can have very different effects on the speech that is produced. For example, the ‘a’ sound (written by speech-pathologists and linguists as ‘æ’) in the word ‘bat’ is made without rounding the lips and with the tongue down. On the other hand, the ‘oo’ sound (written as ‘ʊ’ by experts) in the word ‘book’ is produced by rounding the lips and raising the tongue. Give it a try yourself and feel the differences! This is also the case with consonants but the teeth have an important role in the production of some sounds as well. Consider the ‘d’ or ‘t’ sound. When these are produced, the tip of the tongue raises to touch the back of the teeth. Each sound in the English alphabet is made by different body parts, or articulators. Combining these movements produces words, which flows into speech without any thinking (most of the time) on your part.
