Mount Vernon District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Mount Vernon has implemented literacy instruction in every core content class in the district. This will not only help students with understanding and analyzing informational texts, it puts the district on the right track for implementation of the Common Core State Standards that have been adopted by Washington State. The English Language Arts curriculum used in the district is split into reading and writing strands, but the two strands are used in conjunction with each other to make sure students get as much exposure to the necessary skills and requirements as possible. The writing curriculum utilizes the Step Up to Writing program in all grade levels. Students write both narrative and expository essays and cross content writing while following the Washington State Standards for writing.

Chalk Talk: Helping with Difficult Teachers
Occasionally, there can be problems between a teacher and a student. This leaves the parents with a difficult situation. They want the best for their child, but they also want them to learn to get along with everyone. If a child talks to a parent about situations with a teacher that bothers them, the parents need to hear them out. This helps to relieve a little stress. If the situation is still an issue, parents can make an appointment with a guidance counselor. This is someone in the school who would know about other problems that may have arisen with this educator. A meeting can also be arranged directly with the teacher by the parents to discuss the difficulties. If it is comfortable for the teen, they can attend the meeting with the counselor and the teacher.
