Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Munster District Curriculum

Students in all grades are taught content and procedural skills to make learning more applicable for everyday application. At the secondary level, the Language Arts curriculum is a balance of literature, writing, and oral communication. The district also provides students with unique learning experiences and opportunities early on in their K-12 careers. From grades 1-5, students are engaged in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) creative and collaborative challenges in robotics.

Guidance counselors are available to help students and parents identify and set educational and career goals, as well as achieve them. Advanced courses for college credit in the areas of Business, English, Fine Arts, Mathematics, and several other subjects are offered. AP courses in Art History, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English, Government and Politics, and many other areas are available as well.

Chalk Talk: Ways to Study

There are many techniques for studying effectively. Testing yourself has been proven to be very effective when it comes to learning and retaining information. For example, students can use flashcards or answer review questions at the end of a section in a textbook to ensure that they really understand what’s in front of them. Long sessions in which a lot of information is studied will often have the opposite effect of what a student needs. It’s actually better to study in shorter, more frequent sessions to prevent burnout. Where you study also has an effect on how well you retain information. Finding a spot that is free from distractions is essential and it is even more helpful if that spot is used solely for studying. Try staying away from places that have a TV or phones or any other noisy environments. There’s a reason why libraries are such popular study spots!
