Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Murray District Curriculum

Mathematics and Science are very important parts of the curriculum in Murray. Science is a discipline that teaches your child to be inquisitive and use evidence to understand the world. Math has a core set of goals that are taught and assessed. There is a Math and Science program in place to help your child’s teacher to integrate the subjects and to use the best practices available. Standards are set in each grade and students are assessed on how well they meet those standards.

In English/Language Arts, the strands of reading, writing, speaking, listening, inquiring, observing and using computers to communicate are followed. Goals are set in the strands and students are encouraged to meet those goals. In reading, students read a variety of types of text and it becomes more complicated as they progress through the grades. In writing, goals are set and students are continually assessed to meet those goals. Speaking practice and skills are taught and assessed. Students are taught progressively through the grades to speak in public.

Chalk Talk: Inquiring Minds Are Learning Minds

Encourage your child to ask questions continually. Some children do this automatically and some have to be encouraged. A child who asks questions learns a lot more than one who is too shy to do so. You can encourage this by asking questions of him or her. Or make a time every day that he or she must ask a question and you will answer it. It’s all about encouragement and making time. A child with an inquiring mind will find learning a pleasure.
