Myrtle Beach District and Curriculum

The public schools in Myrtle Beach seek to be world-class public schools where all students receive an excellent education. These schools are centered around quality teaching and learning. To achieve this vision, Myrtle Beach schools follow the lead of the Horry County School district in the adoption of the Common Core State Standards in Math and English Language Arts.

We currently cover the following Myrtle Beach-area school district: Horry County Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Myrtle Beach District Curriculum

In Math, the Common Core changes the pace of student development. Rather than teaching students many concepts, but barely going below the surface each year, the Common Core requires greater depth. Students practice fewer standards while mastering them at great depth, and therefore require less review of the concepts in future classes. The standards focus on numerical operations, algebra, geometry, data analysis (statistics and probability), and trigonometry.

English Language Arts has also changed the focus of learning to help students prepare for life in the real world. Instead of focusing mostly on literature, students are invited to read and synthesize non-fiction as well. The English teachers partner with the content areas to help students learn to apply their learning in a more practical manner. There is an emphasis on word study, reading comprehension, writing abilities, critical media viewership, and the development of research skills.

Chalk Talk: College Scholarships

There are many ways to pay for college, including saving up the money and planning ahead of time or taking out student loans which must be paid back later. However, why not let someone else pay for your child’s education through scholarships? Many universities give out free money to students based on GPA, ACT/SAT scores, leadership activities, volunteer experience, and extra-curricular activities. However, more money can be found through simple internet searches. Oftentimes it takes less than 30 minutes to fill out a scholarship application from a private organization. While these scholarships may only equal two to three hundred dollars, considering that it took only 30 minutes of work to receive that money it is easy money which can offset the high cost of post-secondary education.
