Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Nanticoke District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum encompasses all areas of reading, writing, and communicating. Students in middle and high school are expected to read critically from nonfiction in a variety of disciplines and learn how to use the information appropriately. Critical reading is a combination of recognizing the key words and arguments in a subject area, identifying specifics, and analyzing, and evaluating the information. Reading increasingly complex nonfiction across the content areas is important to college and career success.

All students in Pennsylvania high schools, including students at the Greater Nanticoke Area High School, must complete an extended project as part of graduation requirements. Students can focus on community service, creativity in the arts or writing, career exploration, or academics for their project. Graduation requirements also include credits in English, math, social studies, science, and other studies. These requirements prepare students to enter college and do well in academic studies in whatever field they choose to enter.

Chalk Talk: Ways to Read for Meaning

In order to be successful when reading nonfiction, look for clues such as headings, charts and graphs, and information specific to the subject. Pay careful attention to chapter and subject headings, as they highlight important points and can serve as an outline. When reading scientific articles, charts and graphs provide essential data in a format that provides quick comparisons. Use glossaries and other reference materials to make sure you understand the words in each reading. Take notes on the important points throughout each reading and you will have built an outline to study from on future tests.
