Chalk Talk: How to Read a Book for Class

Many teachers require their students to read a novel or a similar piece of work for a class, particularly in English classes. Your ability to comprehend what you’ve read is very important if you want a good grade in the class. If you’re not excited about the book that’s been assigned, try looking up information about the time period in which it was written, the author, or the cultures in it. Interesting background material can help reading the book seem less like a chore. Next, you should try to read straight through the first few chapters. These chapters are often essential to understanding the story, so pay attention and take notes, if you’d like. Reading a few chapters at a time also helps you get into the story, since it can be difficult to get excited about one chapter. Keep in mind that you may have to read a chapter more than once to completely absorb or understand the material. This is also why it’s important to pick a place that’s quiet and free from distractions, since you’ll need to concentrate. Although it may seem easier to skim the book, it is better to read it thoroughly so that you can pick up small details. Reading for class can be enjoyable and educational if you want it to be!
