Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Nebraska City District Curriculum

In the K-12 Mathematics coursework, the concepts that are taught consist of the mastery of all aspects of the number system, such as the representation and demonstration of the complex relationships between the rational numbers (positive) that are in the base-ten numerical system. Comparing and ordering numbers and decimals are objectives focused on in the number sense category.

During a students’ schooling in Reading, they are taught many concepts, which include the grasping of the many strategies of comprehension. Extracting meaning and making sense out of text using schema and being an active reader is very important to master before they enter the upper grades where the reading becomes more challenging. Being able to understand that the author has a purpose for writing, and being able to recognize that purpose is very important as well, as the purpose for writing the text can influence the meaning.

Keeping Informed: Recent Nebraska City Educational News

  • SchoolMessenger - SchoolMessenger is a company that provides up to the minute information for parents and students. If something should happen, such as school closings, cancellation of events, important announcements, lunch balance information, and much more, SchoolMessenger will send out an automated phone call. All parents need to do is sign up and choose the method of receiving the notifications, such as through phone calls, emails, or text messages (or all three). What a great way for the school system to keep everyone in the know!
  • Enchanted Arboretum - Beautiful miniature tree maquettes have been created by students of Nebraska City Public Schools. Partnering with this Public Arts Project, the trees are gorgeous additions to the high school, where visitors can come and view this “Enchanted Arboretum.” Great job to the students who have decorated the trees!
  • Senior Alert - During the senior year, some general graduation reminders are helpful to have in mind. Make sure to order the cap and gowns, finish up any community service projects, complete the announcements to send out, and make payment of all fees and fines. Keep checking on the website of Nebraska City Schools and the high school site to be sure everything is in place for graduation. If seniors have any questions, do not hesitate to call the high school guidance office!

Chalk Talk: Bringing the Community Together with Art

Art is so important in the school system. Students need a chance to explore different avenues and learn about creativity. Fine Arts give the students this outlet for expression and to showcase their talent. Artistic displays in the school board office, in the lobbies of the schools around the district, or even around the community not only give a certain eye appeal to the people, but give the students a sense of completion and success!
