Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Nederland District Curriculum
Statistics is part of the mathematics curriculum at Nederland Independent School District. When students are in the elementary grades they discover, through looking at patterns, what weather to expect during different times of the year. Also when they find out what kind of fruit each student enjoys, they collect, analyze and draw conclusions from data. As they enter middle and high school they find out how to plan and conduct projects.
The Language Arts curriculum combines reading, writing, listening and speaking. This includes learning how to create good sentences and paragraphs which relates the needed ideas to others. They also learn how to summarize a topic through a good conclusion. The students also learn how to use these writing skills when sharing literary analysis with their classmates. When they reach high school the students learn how to compare movies with novels and they also write and create oral presentation on subjects that deal with authors they are reading, such as presenting a time travel presentation when reading works by Bradbury.

- Academic Decathlon - Students who choose to participate in the Academic Decathlon are presented with seven academic tests, a few communication activities and a Super Quiz Relay. The subjects consist of economics, music, language and literature, math, art and science. For the communication portion, students take part in an interview, an essay and speeches. The Super Quiz is conquered as a team, and it has a written portion and a relay.
- FFA Organization - The FFA incorporates classes in agriculture with activities that show how students can become in one of the many areas in this field. At Nederland students may take classes in Agriculture Mechanics, Wildlife and Fisheries Management and in Food Processing. The students can then participate in competitions for rewards and scholarships, in the areas of wildlife, veterinary science, cotton, livestock judging, entomology, agriculture mechanics, creed speaking, quizzes and demonstrations of skills they have developed.
- NHS Choirs - The NHS Choirs are made up of a concert choir, chorale, treble choir and a men’s choir. These groups take part in all Texas Music Education Association and UIL competitions. They also perform at many civic and community events.

Chalk Talk: Repeating a Grade
In days past, it was very easy to decide to hold a child back a grade level. If their grades did not meet standards they repeated a grade. However, this is not always the best choice. Students may show progress if they repeat a grade, but this progress regresses within a few years when the child is presented with new topics. This student also faces the challenge of having different interests than those that a year or so younger than him or her. This means social opportunities become lacking. To go along with this when a child is retained, they often feel it emotionally. Rather than retain a child, first talk with the school counselor and the staff to see what suggestions they may have, perhaps hiring a tutor to assist the child in any difficult area they may come upon. Most of all, make sure to value the child for the successes they do present.
