Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Neenah District Curriculum
Neenah Joint School District is currently in the process of transitioning to the Common Core State Standards for the subject of English Language Arts. During this transition, the language arts curriculum will maintain balanced literacy instruction. The literacy program is intentional, purposeful, student-centered instruction that provides opportunities for students to engage in reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and graphic representation on a daily basis.
The school district also places an emphasis on wellness education across all K-12 grades. Students gain knowledge, physical fitness, motor and social skills, and positive attitudes beneficial to them in and out of school. Wellness technology is integrating into the program, with students using pedometers, heart rate technology, and Polar TriFIT fitness assessment software to accurately evaluate student fitness levels. Students receive personalized health and fitness portfolios, with both students and parents receiving trend reports on the students' fitness.

- Riverside Players - Bring your children show their creative talents this summer. The Riverside Players is a unique and entertaining outdoor theater experience that brings the audience into the performance. "Theatre in the Park" is summer long series of interactive productions that the whole family will enjoy. The outdoor theatre has been running since 1995, consistently providing plays and musicals for the community during the summer months.
- STEM Summer Program - Neenah Joint School District offers students in grades K-5 the opportunity to expand their science, technology, engineering and manufacturing (STEM) skills during a unique summer program. This summer, during the week of July 14-18, 50 students were taught various STEM area concepts and activities. Students learned engineering design to create puzzle cubes, scientific investigation of mixing and evaluating self-made polymer compounds, exploration of different materials based on structure and function to solve design challenges, and participated in engineering challenges such as a marble roller coaster, paddleboat, zip-line and structures.
- Proces Poetry Prize - Congratulations to all the K-12 students throughout Neenah who were honored for their poetry writing talents! The Neenah Public Library recognized 22 students for their creativity and writing as part of the annual Proces Poetry Prize content. Every student who submitted a piece received a bookmark and those who won were awarded a bookplate. The contest runs every May and winning poems are displayed at the library. Encourage your child to show their creative and writing talents by submitting a poem next year.

Many schools offer a portal or site that allow parents to view various information about their child’s school, classes, homework and assignments, even compatible resources for the home. The portal or site is also a way to communicate more easily with your child’s teacher. Schools use these sites as a “location” for all and everything parents and students would find information they need for school. However, accessing them, even knowing about the portal or site for your school may be unfamiliar to some. Many parents work and assume emailing the teacher is the fastest and easiest way to communicate with their child’s teacher or a school administrator. However, logging onto the school portal may provide you with the information you need without having to send an email and wait for a response. How do you find out about the school portal? One way is to visit the school website. Another way is during Curriculum or Open House nights. Teachers provide the link and password needed to access the portal and all that is provides.
