Educating Our Parents: Understanding the New Brunswick District Curriculum
The students receive a standards-based education that focuses on learning in the following core areas: English, fine and performing arts, health and physical education, mathematics, social studies and science. As students move from kindergarten through to the 12th grade, they are expected to meet increasingly rigorous standards in order to graduate with a full complement of knowledge and skills necessary for post-secondary pursuits.
A special area of emphasis is literacy across multiple disciplines. For example, students in a middle school social studies class must be able to cite evidence from research, evaluate how a text presents information and distinguish between fact and opinion in historical documents. In high school, students gain more complex literacy skills where they must demonstrate an ability to integrate diverse information into a cohesive argument, analyze the content of primary and secondary sources, and evaluate disparate explanations of actions or events in order to determine the most likely explanation.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Co-Curricular Activities
While academic activities are highly important in the development of well-rounded students, co-curricular activities have their place in fostering the positive development of children. The skills and knowledge students learn in the classroom can be applied to real-world situations when they play sports, participate in clubs or take part in work-study programs. The problem-solving skills students learn in math can help them figure out the weak areas of their opponent’s defense in a soccer game. The communication skills they acquire in language arts can help them deliver an incredible performance on the debate team. And the teamwork they learn in physical education can help them organize activities for their after-school club. Co-curricular activities aren’t just a great way for kids to interact with one another, they provide additional opportunities for kids to express their creativity and learn valuable life lessons.
