Educating Our Parents: Understanding the New Milford District Curriculum
The New Milford School District has developed a comprehensive K-12 curriculum designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to attain their educational, career and life goals. The need to prepare students for the highly competitive global economy also drives curriculum development. As such, all district curricula align with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, as well as the Common Core State Standards.

Foundational skills, such as learning common prefixes and suffixes, decoding the meaning of words and reading with accuracy and fluency are emphasized in the elementary curriculum. Middle school students engage in a curriculum that focuses on writing an effective persuasive essay, conducting research to fully answer a question and writing clear and cohesive arguments. Chalk Talk: Benefits of Hands On Learning
Although there are many methods teachers can use to convey information to and facilitate the development of skills in their students, hands on learning is one of the best ways to help students retain important information. In fact, students who engage in hands on learning activities retain about three times as much information as students who simply listen to a lecture. In technical or career classes, where students learn how to complete projects by using saws, computers, automotive equipment and the like, hands on learning gives students a better understanding of how to utilize their tools to complete their tasks. Hands on learning also provides real-world experience for students in a non-pressure environment. Students can gain valuable confidence in working with materials and equipment under the watchful eye of a caring instructor before ever having to prove themselves on the job.
