Educating Our Parents: Understanding the New Rochelle District Curriculum

The core subjects are designed around a framework that details the grade-level skills and knowledge, and the modes of thinking and communicating that students will do. For instance, Language Arts has been developed with an eye to how language helps students in acts of analysis and evaluation, understanding informational texts, writing and clear expression, and for social interaction. Students will learn about the conventions and structure of the language and be expected to exhibit this on written assignments.

Math, Science, and Technology have come under one framework in the NYS Learning Standards. Students are to use all three subjects to tackle learning challenges and determine processes for investigating, experimenting, and solving problems. These skills naturally gain in complexity as students move from elementary to high school, but they are scaffolded by the expectations detailed in the curriculum. The goal of the schools is to educate the whole child, and so, a range of other programs have been developed to match diverse student interests and needs.

New Rochelle Area District Curriculum We Follow

Students are to gain all necessary skills in core academic subjects so that they can approach a learning challenge with the strategies to solve it, students should be offered programs and classes that prepare them for college and career in an increasingly global and technological society, and student achievement should be assessed so to ensure that students, and the instructional process, are meeting the standards.

We currently cover the following New Rochelle-area school district: New Rochelle School District.

Chalk Talk: Dollars and Sense

How many times have you read the headline, “Top 10 Majors Employers Hire,” or, “The Least Valuable Degrees?” The Internet provides a new one almost weekly. Don’t let that keep you from your dreams! While a degree in English always ends up on the “least valuable” list, many employers seek the skills English majors bring to the table: writing skills, eloquent speech, and intelligence, to name a few. When choosing a course of study, first think of what your ideal job might be. Then do some research to determine what degree would best suit your dream job. Pursuing only what pays the most may feel like you’re a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. Sticking with what you love may prove to be more rewarding in the end.
